There’s More Than Meets the Eye

These are just some of the comments left on our local news site following a recent concert announcement.  I’m disappointed by the negativity, but this is precisely why I want to use this blog as a platform to showcase all of the amazing bands and talent that tend to get overlooked or under-promoted here.

What strikes me the most is that people are requesting other styles of music and different bands, when in reality, we have a LOT of artists passing through, usually at least weekly.  Maybe they’re not quite as well known as the musicians headlining our larger venues, but they’re still taking the time to stop and play for the people in this city, even if they end up only playing for a handful of listeners.

Often, it’s musicians who are on the brink of really getting somewhere in their career, and those are the ones that people find out about years later, exclaiming ‘I can’t believe they played here and I missed them!’  I know, because on more than several occasions, I’ve been that person.  My suggestion is simple:  stop bitching, and if you don’t recognize the name of a band that’s been announced here, Google them!  Check out their music on a streaming platform, like Spotify or Apple Music.  I’ve come across some amazing bands and artists just by doing that, bands that have now become some of my favourites.

Make sure you check out the Calendar tab in the menu above, I’m updating it constantly with new shows as they get announced.  You can really see just how many musical acts we’re actually getting here that you may not be hearing about.  Remember, just because you didn’t hear them on 99.5, it doesn’t mean they aren’t worth your time.  A lot of these shows are free or low cost to attend, so check them out!

Hope to see you all at a show real soon 🙂

  1. I couldn’t agree more. I hate the negativity that is flooded when shows are announced, and people degrade the artists that are upcoming. I’m glad you’re supporting Music in such a positive way. That’s why I’m reviewing albums by upcoming and popular bands: to help with exposure!

    • Thanks for stopping by! I love that there are like-minded people out there who support the arts and want to do what they can to help the music scene 🙂
